Start Reading!

Please join us for the next Adult Learning session when we discuss Rashi’s Daughters, Book 1: Jocheved, by Maggie Anton. Sharon Tinianow will lead the discussion of the book, which is set in France in the late 1400s and provides a window into a world in which ritual was integrated into every aspect of the lives of pious Jews as well as defied by Rashi when he decides to teach his daughters Talmud.

Along with lively discussion we will continue our community’s study of ritual by making challah.

When: September 18th at 4pm

Where: 152 Winthrop in Clintonville

Please RSVP to peggybrgr@gmail.com or stinianow@columbus.rr.com

A donation for the challah ingredients would be appreciated.

Time to Celebrate

Thanks to everyone who joined the Mini-Minyan mock wedding and end-of-year celebration on a beautiful Sunday morning at the Park of Roses. Our Bet class taught us–by demonstrating–about the customs of a Jewish wedding ceremony, then we all enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch.

Thanks to Rabbi Wendy and Jessica for another fabulous year of Mini-Minyan!

We Came, We Walked, We Helped

In addition to our monthly support of the Community Resources Center, eight Little Minyan members participated in the fourth annual Ring Around the Roses, a 3.1-mile run/walk at Whetsone High School and Park on Memorial Day.

Peggy Berger, Diane Centolella, Bill & Randi Cohen, Christi Lekies, and Deb, Tova and Micki Seltzer supported the CRC, got in a little extra exercise and had a lot of fun.

The next volunteer session for the CRC is scheduled for Thursday, June 30, 5-7 pm. Please join us, whether or not you have volunteered there before. The location is 14 W. Lakeview, 4 blocks south of North Broadway. Feel free to come any time within that time frame. Contact Micki (mcseltzer@wowway.com) if you can attend or if you have any questions.

From the Mini Minyan to the Wailing Wall

The students in our younger Hebrew class took part in a lesson that traveled from here to Israel. The kids wrote notes to God that teacher Tenara took to Jerusalem. See the photos she shared back with the class.

An Afternoon in Esther’s Kitchen

On March 20, Esther’s Kitchen opened its doors to LM members arriving with a variety of fillings and eager to learn how to make hamentaschen. The group had a great time bonding over batter and laughter. In fact, bonding the batter into 3 corners was a skill that developed over time! And “mistakes” were happily eaten.

Talk turned to an interesting discussion about Purim which introduced new perspectives about what many had thought of as a child’s holiday. There was Esther’s deviousness for the good of the Jewish people and how even today we occasionally have to be devious for a good purpose.

Purim’s celebration, with its masks and drinking until we can’t tell the difference between Mordecai and Haman, might be related to Mardi Gras or Carnivale festivals that occurred at the end of the winter when there was very little food left. Drinking and “letting go” was a way to relieve the population of the serious job of surviving until the first harvest.

The group who gathered in Esther’s Kitchen this year certainly let go to the joy of baking, eating and getting to know each other.

Purim Sameach!

Purim is frequently cast as primarily a high-spirited, carnival-like holiday.  In addition to the rowdy reading of Megillat Esther, there are other mitzvot associated with Purim that remind us of the often overlooked joys Purim brings.  The following article by Rabbi Sharon Brous of IKAR in Los Angeles was posted this week by American Jewish World Service.
